Dr. Rooney is a Marine and Coastal Geomorphologist with the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center and the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research at the University of Hawaii. He holds a Ph.D., in Coastal Geology and an M.S. in Oceanography, both from the University of Hawaii. He has conducted research and published results on a wide range of coastal science topics, including mesophotic coral ecosystems of the Pacific, coral reef development, coastal erosion, impacts of land use and climatic fluctuations on coastal systems, and fisheries management. His current interests include mesophotic coral reefs, mapping and management of benthic ecosystems, late Quaternary sea-level fluctuations, and the history and development of coral reefs. Dr. Rooney has conducted and directed research throughout the insular tropical Pacific, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Association for Marine Exploration, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. He is certified as a mixed gas scuba diving instructor and MK15 Closed Circuit Rebreather Mixed Gas Supervisor, and holds a US Merchant Marine 50 Ton Master's License.
